Merlijn
Your Home for the Week
The Merlijn is a 5-star vessel with private baths, twin beds-no
bunk beds- air conditioning and hair dryers.
The lounge covers 90 m. It is comfortably furnished in a modern
style with a restaurant area and lounge near the bar.
You can enjoy fresh air, water and nature in all weather on the 40
m sun deck.

The 12 luxurious passenger cabins are all 11 m in size with two
comfortable airbeds, a desk, a wardrobe, a hairdryer and a safe.
Each cabin has its own shower and toilet.
You can treat yourself to an aperitif or a drink in our bar, but
naturally, room service is also available aboard the Merlijn.
The entire ship is climate controlled and you can adjust the
temperature in your own cabin.
The cuisine is a delight, prepared in a galley equipped with all
modern appliances. Our chef (which is mostly Jantien) not only
provides you with breakfast but will also prepare a packed lunch
if you wish to go cycling or canoeing. A lunch is served on board
and the evening meal is sumptuous. Needless to say, we will take
account of any of your dietary needs.
This is a scenic tour through the
Moselle and Saar River Valleys, an area known for excellent white
wine. The tour includes stops in a number of medieval walled
cities. Your guides will show you other points of interest along
the way. |

Vinothek in Bernkastel-Kues
Arrival in Koblenz
The Merlijn, your sailing hotel already awaits you in the port of
Koblenz. Embarkation starts at 4 pm. The crew welcomes you
on board and while you enjoy your welcome drink you will get
information about the ship, the tours and the bicycles.
After dinner there is time for a stroll through the ancient city
of Koblenz. |

Imperial castle in Cochem
Koblenz-Cochem (26 km)
Today, we start with a sailing breakfast while cruising up the
Moselle river to Alken. Here you will start the biking tour
to Moselkern. You will bike into the Eltztal and visit the
castle Eltz. Lying romantically on a cliff, the castle is one of
the very few that has never been destroyed during its long
history. Afterwards, you will bike on the Cochem where the
Merlijn is already waiting. In Cochem you may want to pay a
visit to the famous Reichsburg or stroll through the cozy streets
in this romantic city. |

Cochem-Bernkastel Kues (53 km)
First, we cruise by ship to Beilstein and you will enjoy a sailing
breakfast. The small village of Beilstein is worth a visit,
it has never been destroyed and you will enjoy a stroll through
this medieval village. Along the meandering Moselle River, you
will bike via Zell - famous for its vineyard Zeller Schwarze Katz
- toward Traben - Trarbach, the city of the art nouveau.
Here you will board the Merlijn again and enjoy a cruise up to
today's destination, Bernkastel-Kues. Here, magnificent
framework houses line the marketplace. If you like, you can
conclude the day by wine-tasting with a local wine-grower. |

Imperial Roman
baths in Trier
Bernkastel Kues-Trier (42 km)
After breakfast, you still have some time for a tour through
Bernkastel-Kues. Later on, you will bike to the holiday
resort of Mehring. The Roman poet Ausonius already sang of
the beautiful landscape in this area. The Romans fell in
love with this landscape more than 2000 years ago and built
splendid country-villas here. In Mehring, we will board the
Merlijn again and cruise to Trier. |

Castle Eltz
Trier-Saarburg (18 km)
In the morning, you may want to explore Trier. Trier was a Roman
government seat and is well-known for its Porta Nigra, a gigantic
city gate. Afterwards you will bike to Saarburg. The cityscape is
embossed from narrow alleys, framework houses, Baroque
constructions as well as colorful fishermen and sailor-houses.
The master architect of Berlin, Karl Friedrich Schinkel already
named the ensemble of romantic houses and small bridges on the
Buttermarkt "Little Venice" in the 19th century. |

Saarweinfest in
Saarburg
Saarburg-Merzig (32 km)
After a tour through Saarburg and a splendid view over the city
and the Saar valley, you bike about 15 km to the Saar-loop near
Orscholz, the renowned river bend of the Saar. More than any
other region, it symbolizes the "rendezvous in Saarland", a
junction of water and land. An excellent viewpoint over the
landscape and the Saar loop is at the "Cloef" above and invites
you to a short stay. From there, it is only 10 km to today's
destination, the city of Merzig. On your way you may want to
visit the village of Villeroy & Boch, Mettlach. In Merzig, a
short city tour in the afternoon gives you a chance to have a look
at structures dating over eight centuries as will as visit some
museums. The "Wolfspark" is a highlight, situated north of
downtown; it was established in 1977 by Werner Freund, the
internationally known ethologist. |

This morning the tour takes us further upstream to Saarbr cken.
The Saarland state capital offers art, culture and nature. Enjoy
the afternoon on the "St. Johanner Market" with a nice glass of
wine. There is always something going on in Saarbr cken,
however thanks to the French serenity of the Saarlander - life is
never hectic. |
